BWF Badminton Court Size

When building a high-quality badminton court, the BWF standard is almost unavoidable, as it represents all the conditions and requirements that a professional and compliant badminton court should possess. The BWF badminton court size is not merely the basic figure of “13.4 meters long and 6.1 meters wide.” Based on our experience in providing court services globally, we will interpret the logic and specifications behind the standard dimensions.

1. BWF Badminton Court Specifications

Singles Badminton

  • Length 13.40m( 43.96 ft) × Width 5.18m (17.00 ft)
  • Diagonal compliance length: 14.366m ( 47.13 ft)
  • In-line area: 69.4 sqm

Double Badminton

  • Length 13.40m (43.96 ft) × Width 6.10m (20.00 ft)
  • Diagonal compliance length: 14.723m (48.30 ft)
  • In-line area: 81.7 sqm

According to BWF’s “Laws of Badminton,” the error in markings and areas must not exceed ±1mm. The width of the court markings is uniformly 40mm, and they must be in a high-contrast, easily identifiable color such as white or yellow. For multi-court construction, a minimum 3m gap must be maintained between the sidelines of two adjacent badminton courts.

This means that the length and width of the court must be measured from the outer edge of the markings, not the inner edge. The badminton court floor mats we provide are marked with the most standard court lines.

2. BWF Badminton Court Floor Dimensions

Over 95% of badminton court materials use PVC rolls, resulting in fewer seams, high flatness, and compliance with certification standards. The floor should be larger than the standard line dimensions, with allowance for this. A buffer zone of at least 1.5-2.0 meters should be provided on both sides. Generally, a 15m long × 7.2m wide PVC mat, or four rolls of 1.8m standard width PVC mats, is sufficient to lay a complete badminton court.

BWF does not mandate specific production dimensions for sports flooring manufacturers, but we can meet all certification requirements. Regarding flatness, the height difference within a 2-meter range must not exceed 0.2mm. Joints must be welded using a hot-welding process; after welding, the height difference at the joint must not exceed 0.5mm, and the gap width must not exceed 0.2mm.

3. FAQ

Can singles and doubles courts share the same court?

Absolutely. The lengths of singles and doubles courts are exactly the same; only the sideline widths differ. During construction, simply draw the outer sideline for doubles and the inner sideline for singles, and mark them clearly to achieve universal use for both singles and doubles.

Are the dimensions of outdoor badminton courts the same as indoor ones?

BWF has specific court specifications for outdoor air badminton, with dimensions of 16.0m long x 6.0m wide, unlike indoor courts. Traditional outdoor badminton courts must have the same in-line dimensions as indoor BWF standards, but require additional ground drainage slope, and the buffer zone is recommended to be at least 3m wide to avoid interference from the outdoor environment.

A truly high-quality badminton court must not only precisely conform to the 13.40m x 6.10m in-line dimensions, but also adhere to the specifications for buffer zone, vertical space, and net post height.
