1. Reasons for Buckling and Deformation of Interlocking Tiles
After installation, buckling and deformation of PP sports court tiles, excluding improper installation, are most likely due to the inability to release the thermal expansion and contraction stress of the PP material. This causes the flooring to squeeze against each other, warp, and bulge. This problem often occurs when recycled PP is used. The molecular chains of recycled PP are broken, and its coefficient of thermal expansion and contraction is 3-5 times that of virgin PP. A temperature change of just 10°C can cause significant expansion and contraction.
Process Issues:
High-quality modular sports flooring incorporates anti-shrinkage agents, nucleating agents, and UV-resistant additives to control the crystallinity of PP and reduce thermal expansion and contraction. Inferior flooring may lack these additives, leading to rapid expansion in high summer temperatures and shrinkage and cracking in low winter temperatures. In production, interlocking tiles are typically molded as a single piece. Older or less advanced production equipment cannot precisely control the injection temperature, resulting in substandard material properties.
Structural Design:
Using dispersed, independent cylindrical support legs without interlocking reinforcement can easily lead to lock breakage and floor warping.
Ordinary lock systems lack expansion allowance; when temperatures rise, the flooring has nowhere to expand and can only bulge upwards.
2. How to Choose High-Quality Interlocking Tiles?
As a distributor, we don’t expect you to become a material expert, but it’s essential to master some convenient and quick identification methods to screen out substandard sports flooring factories during the sample stage.
2.1 How to Identify Recycled Materials
The material must be 100% virgin modified PP.
Virgin PP flooring has a uniform, bright, and glossy color; recycled flooring is dark, grayish, and has discolored spots.
Virgin PP flooring has no odor, or only a slight plastic smell; recycled flooring has a pungent chemical odor, or even a foul smell.
Bend the edges of the flooring forcefully; virgin PP flooring does not break easily and returns to its original shape after being released; recycled flooring breaks easily when bent, and the cross-section contains white powder (calcium powder).
2.2 Structural Design
Independent, dispersed short cylindrical support legs, without interconnection, result in greater stress at the locking joints.
We use an integrated, interconnected design, and even add cushioning pads to allow for combined panels or even continuous single floorboards, improving stability.
For large venues exceeding 500 square meters, we recommend choosing our flexible, interlocking sports flooring to completely avoid deformation and warping issues caused by temperature differences and extreme weather.

2.3 Anti-Loosening Locks
Outdoor sports flooring tiles using a “dovetail groove + anti-loosening lock” design ensure a tight fit while allowing for 0.1-0.2mm of expansion and contraction. You can request samples from the manufacturer to check the tightness of the joints and locks after splicing two tiles. High-quality flooring has gaps ≤0.1mm and a smooth surface without unevenness.
2.4 Quick Test
Immerse PP tiles in 80℃ hot water for 30 minutes; no significant deformation should occur.
After soaking in hot water, freeze the flooring in a -20℃ freezer for 24 hours, then observe the results.
