The lifespan of many sports flooring products is not determined by the product itself, but by subsequent maintenance. According to international standards such as ASTM and EN 14904, proper cleaning, maintenance, storage, and transportation can extend the lifespan of PVC sports flooring by more than 30%, and even by 8-12 years in high-traffic venues. Improper cleaning can reduce the floor’s anti-slip performance by 40%, significantly increasing the risk of sports injuries.
This article will explain the full lifespan guide for PVC sports floor mat after purchase and installation, covering aspects such as daily cleaning, deep cleaning, stain treatment, roll material transportation, and storage standards.
1. Why Proper Maintenance Matters?
1.1 Extending Lifespan
The design lifespan of high-quality indoor vinyl sports flooring is 8-12 years. Under proper maintenance, the lifespan can be extended to 12-15 years, an increase of over 30%. Conversely, improper cleaning methods and storage will cause the floor’s wear layer to wear out faster, potentially leading to large-area scratches, slip resistance failure, blistering, and delamination within 3-5 years, necessitating premature replacement.
1.2 Safety
Vinyl sports flooring conforming to EN 14904 standards maintains a stable coefficient of friction within the safe range of 0.4-0.7, with a shock absorption rate of 30%-50%, effectively reducing joint injuries during sports activities. Improper cleaning (such as using strong alkaline cleaners or wax products) will damage the surface anti-slip coating, reducing its anti-slip performance and increasing the risk of slipping.
1.3 Appearance and Texture
A high-quality and popular sports venue not only boasts a clean environment but also pristine sports flooring. This attracts more sports enthusiasts; who wants to play in a venue with questionable hygiene? Regular and standardized cleaning also prevents stains from seeping into the texture and dust from forming stubborn stains over time, preventing color differences and enhancing the user experience and the venue’s premium pricing power.
1.4 Reduce Costs
Over a 10-15 year lifespan, the average annual cost of proper maintenance is less than $1/㎡, only 1/6 of the cost of replacing the entire floor.
1.5 Maintain Performance
The core indicators of professional sports flooring, such as ball rebound rate, rolling load, and vertical deformation, all rely on a complete wear-resistant layer and foam cushioning structure.
2. Daily Cleaning
After installation and subsequent cleaning, the first step should be to remove surface dust and debris.
It is recommended to use a microfiber mop with a fiber density ≥200g/㎡ and a vacuum cleaner with soft wheels, pushing dust at a steady speed, focusing on cleaning areas with more dust, such as the court edges, under equipment, and entrances/exits.
Do not use hard-bristled brooms or ordinary hard household brushes, as the rough bristles will scratch the wear-resistant layer and accelerate surface aging.
Mechanical cleaning can improve efficiency and cleanliness. It is recommended to use a low-speed cleaning machine and choose a neutral pH value (between 7 and 9), low-foaming cleaner. The cleaner must be solvent-free, phosphate-free, and phenol-free.
Do not wash the floor with large amounts of water. PVC material differs from outdoor PP tiles, and water seeping into the floor seams can cause the floor to bulge, delaminate, and mold grow on the subfloor.
3. Deep Cleaning
Deep cleaning removes deep-seated dirt, grease, and residual stains that daily cleaning cannot remove. The blue pad on the floor scrubber is effective for very stubborn stains, while the red pad is sufficient for daily deep cleaning.
Use an automatic floor scrubber with a soft nylon pad (red pad) at a low speed of 150-350 rpm, cleaning along the floor grain. For heavily soiled areas, repeat the process slowly. Do not use abrasive pads.
Immediately after cleaning, use a wet vacuum to remove all wastewater, then rinse the floor thoroughly with clean water to remove any cleaning agent residue—residual cleaning agent will make the floor sticky and attract more dust.
Turn on ventilation equipment or open windows to ventilate the floor. Allow the floor to dry completely before reopening to prevent footsteps.
Deep cleaning requires strict adherence to the use of steel wool, scouring pads, and abrasive cleaning mats, as these tools will directly scratch the wear-resistant layer.
4. Prohibited Cleaning Products
Dongxing Plastic does not provide any PVC floor cleaning products. We recommend using cleaning agents that meet standard requirements.
- Strong acid cleaners
- Strong alkaline cleaners
- Bleach / Chlorine-containing disinfectants
- Organic solvents: such as acetone, thinner, turpentine.
- Steel wool / Hard abrasive mats
- Ordinary floor wax / Polishing wax
5. Cleaning Precautions
For best results, it is recommended to clean in the absence of direct sunlight.
Before cleaning the floor, vacuum to remove all debris.
Wet vacuum cleaners or automatic floor cleaners are recommended, equipped with non-abrasive brush pads.
For small areas, please use manual cleaning equipment such as wet mops.
Never allow your floor to get wet.
Control personnel from bringing garbage, debris, dust, sand, gravel, mud, and dirt into the site. 6. Adhesive Application on Sports Floors
Chewing gum and smoking on sports floors are prohibited.
High heels and hard-soled shoes are prohibited on sports floors; only indoor court shoes with non-marking, non-black soles are permitted.
6. Roll Material Handling and Relocation
Dragging roll materials is strictly prohibited. Regardless of weight, dragging roll materials directly on the ground is forbidden. Friction will scratch the floor surface and cause wear on the edges.
Throwing roll materials from heights or rolling them directly from vehicles or platforms is strictly prohibited. Severe impacts will damage the internal structure and crack the surface.
Excessive bending, folding, and twisting of PVC roll materials is prohibited. Excessive bending will cause creases and cracks in the floor, permanently preventing it from regaining its flatness.
Protective measures are required when bundling roll materials. When using ropes to bundle roll materials, soft padding must be added at contact points to prevent narrow ropes from damaging the edges and surface of the roll material. Each roll of flooring should be lifted and moved by at least two people, keeping it horizontal to prevent deformation due to uneven stress.
When temporarily storing rolls, prioritize vertical placement. Do not stack heavy objects on top of the rolls to avoid prolonged pressure and deformation.
